* lunch buddy …
I have to share something with y’all. I did something really fun yesterday. I am officially a lunch buddy! I am so excited. To be honest, I was sorta, kinda dreading the notion of going to an elementary school to have lunch with some kid I’ve never even met. What an idiot I am. (there is no reason for you to say amen to that)! Anyway, so my usual lunch date, troll manTony, stood me up yesterday, he said something about having to teach to earn some extra money … blah blah blah is what I heard. I really do not like my normal daily schedule being interrupted. Do his kids seriously need Christmas presents more than I need to have my normal lunch plans? No ? well … that’s what I thought too.
Thus, in the spirit of playing nice and actually following through on my committment to the whole lunch buddy thing, I hauled my big fanny to the elementary school where I had in a moment of weaknessvolunteered to eat with some random kid. It was a 50/50 shot at worst … even if the kid was a brat, food was thrown in as a bonus. So I get to the school, check in, get my badge and off to the lunch room we go to meet my new buddy. I don’t know if I’m allowed to tell you his name so we are just going to refer to him as Buddy. Oh. My. Gosh! I was the grand prize lunch buddy winner. I met this kid and in like 2 seconds flat, decided that all along, I needed a lunch buddy named Buddy. He is a funny kid. He has great manners and best of all … he loves to talk. Lunch flew by. I don’t have any boys, unless you count Richard, so I was a tad nervous that I wouldn’t know any boy stuff to talk about … phfff, what a waste of worry. During our conversation he informed me that his favorite place to eat was “jobangles” … y’all I nearly died. I melted right in the seat. He had no way of knowing this, but it has been a long running family joke that we call Bojangles, jobangles … my mama started it a long time ago. I had never heard anyone else call it that. Near the end of lunch, Buddy asked me if I would be coming back. I explained that if it was ok with him, I would come back every week. He informed me that tomorrow would be fine. I smiled. I then explained that I would be back one day next week, but not ever on a Monday because of my job. He wasn’t phased … he proceeded to patiently explain to me that any day would be fine and that he was (and I quote) “there about every day”. He gave me a hug.
I’m not sure that I’ve ever spent a better $3.oo in my entire life. If you have time, I would strongly encourage you to get you one of them there lunch buddy’s. Of course, you won’t get the best one because I already have him, but maybe your kid won’t be too bad. Plus, lunch room food is much better than I remembered it being back in the day.

How precious! That’s very exciting. I’m so glad you had a good experience. You’ll have to tell Buddy next week that he’s famous.
speaking of lunch buddies … i have a lunch date and hopefully football game date with your mommy tomorrow!
What a cool expierence for both you !!!!!
welcome to one of the many wonderful parts of my future job!
so glad it went well for you and Buddy.
Melinda, I had a lunch buddy when I worked at the bank over in Bethlehem. And your mother was the one who got it set up for me, this was the first time I had ever met her. It was a blessing for me.
katrina, for some reason i think that my mom and i once had a converstation about you volunteering at the school. i have no clue why i remember that but i do. she was such a leader when it came to getting people to volunteer. i think it was just easier to do whatever she told you to do than listen to her explain to you the reasons you ought to be seeing things her way. now that you are back in town, maybe you should get you a lunch buddy in town!
Your mother would be so proud of you. However, I would check our lunch menu cause there are days, I wonder what it is I am going to eat. However, I am also too lazy to bring my lunch. Personally, I like the “assistant to the assistant program”. Bobbi is mine. LOL She is a tremendous help to me every Friday and I don’t know how I would get done all the stuff I have to do on a Friday without her.
ahh bobbi. what did we ever do without her? she and the family went out of town the other week … we quickly reminded her that she could have a weekend pass to visit her bio family but they under no circumstances would be moving back to where they came from. she is a great help with so many things, in fact, Cathy was hunting her today to start on a project for the church house. as for my mom … i hope she would be proud, her attitude toward servant hood was such a great example for me to follow, my dad’s not to bad in the serving dept. either. i hope that i can give back half as much as they have.
