* where oh where has the week gone? …

Posted on May 5th, 2010 by melinda in Another day in the life of me.

How is it that I cannot seem to find time these days to get everything done within a 24 hour span of time?  Somehow, I thought when the girls were grown ups, my life would slow down to a moderately leisurely pace.  Oh my friends, how wrong I was.  Some days I swear I am busier now than I was when I was a single parent running between soccer fields, softball fields and PTA meetings.  Maybe it’s just that I’m getting older and things just take me longer?  Maybe I just don’t utilize the word no nearly often enough, but in defense of me not utilizing the word no… I just want to say, the things I commit myself to doing are things that I really want to do, not things that I half heartily feel obligated to do.  I have come the the ultimate conclusion that I am not very good at time management.  Which is ironic in and of itself, because I just gave Chrisi a long talking  to a couple of weeks ago about managing her time in a better way.  Hello pot, I’m kettle, nice to meet you!

Do you ever make a list or have mental notes of things that you promise yourself you are going to do in a certain time frame?  I’ll give you a few for instances in my case:

#1. I am going camping as much as possible this summer no matter what.

#2. I will finish sewing and/or embroidering some stuff this week.

#3. I will clean the clothes off of my dresser in my bedroom so that it doesn’t resemble a salvation army bin for another week.

#4. I will at some point shave my legs and arm pits, even if it requires using Richard’s electric razor.

#5. I will mow the grass and stop trying to figure out exactly how much it would cost to just fence the entire yard in to let the horses mow for the summer.

See?  Those are just a few examples of my “to do” list for this week.  Do you think I’ve gotten any of them accomplished?  Um, the answer is no just in case you may be pondering about it.

I’ve gone camping once.  One time.  And that time was to take the youth.

I’m not even sure where my sewing machine may be at this particular moment.

Do I have a dresser in my bedroom or has it been consumed by the 72 loads of clothes still on top of it?

We’ll just skip right over #4.  Don’t ask.

And the yard?  Can you say 1-800-tractorsupply … fence department please.

The worst part is … I haven’t even begun to list the things that are on my “it can wait until next week list”, which will more than likely become the “it will probably never get done” list.  Closets?  Ppssshhh … who needs to see their closet floor?  Windows?  That’s why Walmart sells blinds and curtains.  Cabinets? Please, I like the challenge of trying to fit my ample behind in the 2×2 doors to find the one bowl I own with a lid that doesn’t say cool whip.

I hope at least one of you will tell me that I am not the only person on this planet who seems to stay busy doing a whole lot of nothing productive.  That I am not the only person in the universe who comes home exhausted, but filled with love, laughter and new memories of nights spent bowling with their kids and friends, and trips over the 3 pairs of flip flops, tennis shoes and dress shoes strewn from the front door to the bed.  Tell me that I am not the only person in the world who considers fish sticks and tater tots a suitable meal on a regular basis these days, simply because it doesn’t require a measuring cup or milk, that I have most likely not been to the grocery store to purchase and the milk currently in the fridge has now become cottage cheese.  Ya, that’s gross isn’t it?

I’m really not certain how I arrived at this point in my life.  I am certain that my early 40’s are not exactly what I pictured them to be, but I am also certain that even with the craziness of it all, I wouldn’t give up one night with the girls, Richard, our family or our friends for the sparkliest shower in all the land.

I am right there with you. I sent you a small pic of where my shoes are stored. LOL I get a whole lot of nothing done. 1. Bryant got married on the 24th and I have yet to print off the pics I have been given. 2. I have yet to give him a wedding gift (except for the fact I showed up) 3. I have yet to get the frame for Kayla’s diploma that I actually bought and gave to Bryant. and so forth and so on. I think you get the pic.

    Love ya

oh my goodness did you ever make me laugh today! thanks for being the kind of friend who doesn’t mind sharing pictures of your closet … I knew there was a reason I love you so much!

Now that is funny, I am not sure I even saw the closet……I cropped close so you couldn’t see the rest of the mess. Love you too!

This is so funny – I was just talking about the fact that the less I MUST do, the less I DO do . . . When the kids were young, I worked nites, slept a few hours, picked them up from school, drove to Hickory twice a week for allergy shots (remember where I live – that’s like 2 hours minimum), cooked supper, etc . . . and got it all done in time to get to work early! (notice I did not mention ‘clean house’, which never actually gets done no matter how many lists I make!) Now, even if there is not one single thing I have to do all day long but be at work at 7pm, I will still be 5 minutes late!
