* Friday night book club except it’s Wednesday …

Posted on June 16th, 2010 by melinda in Another day in the life of me.

In last night’s post, I mentioned that I had just finished a really good book.  I usually do book reviews or whatever you want to call them, on Friday nights … but this week on Friday night, I won’t be home, thus we are having Wednesday night book club.

Before I tell you about the book, I have to explain to you another one of my many weird quirks.  I have this weird fascination with all things China.  I don’t know why, I just do.  I don’t like Chinese decorations and I really don’t like Chinese food, but the culture, especially historical culture, captivates me to no end.  I think maybe because it’s a place so engrained in tradition and heritage.  Whatever it is,  a lot of books I read have something to do with Chinese traditon.  Please keep in mind, these are fictional books, not actual historical accounts.  If I want to read about actual historical events, I am most likely reading about something concerning American history, although I do venture in to other areas of the world on occasion.

The book I just finished is called The Concubine’s Daughter.  Heather loaned it to me and I loved it.  I won’t tell you about it, because I don’t want to spoil it in case you decide to read it.  But I will tell you that it spans the lives of several Chinese families, begining in the late 1800’s and going thru the mid 1900’s.  It’s about 470 pages and I read it in 4 days, but I am a slow reader, so if you read quickly, you will get thru it quick, it’s a definate page turner … I was hooked before the first chapter really got started good.

Now that I’m finished with this one, I need some suggestions to take on my camping trip.  I will be gone for a while so I will need something to keep me entertained while laying by the pool.

A couple of my other favorite China related novels are:  Snowflake and the Secret Fan, Memoirs of a Geisha (the book is way better than the movie) and Empress.  If you want to head to the Middle East, try The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Do you get these books from the library or do you buy them? Enjoy your vacation and hope your canning goes well tomorrow.

Im on page 3 like I was oh about three months ago when I decided it some great idea to go see Dear John and then go buy the book for the next sad movie he had coming out. Movies already out and Im still on oh page 3.

dear earpie, as much as i love you and appreciate your generous offer, i must decline … if i feel any great need to drive myself off of a steep cliff, i will let you know and then i can borrow it to get me in the mood … until then, i’m good.

I have the Widow of the South. I’ve not read it yet, so I can’t actually recommend it. I’m working on a book called Lady of Arlington, which is about Robert E. Lee’s wife; so far it is pretty good.

I checked it out from the Taylorsville library… and returned it yesterday. So it’s all yours if you’ll swing by the library after work. :)
