So what does our Sheriff do when he isn’t occupied fighting crime? He works like a pack mule, that’s what he does! He is determined to have his yard in tip top condition for the Hoedown festivities this coming Friday night. First of all, he enjoys manual labor. Like his parents and siblings, working outside is one of his favorite things to do. I try to find other things to do on sunny days when he heads outside. I have no desire to slave away like he does, but I sure do enjoy the final products of his labor. His newest project includes this entry way into his & Chrisi’s garden … Thad & Randy both pitched in to help get it underway …

we now have our own climbing rose bushes (don’t you love how they are mine too) …

garden doctoring from melinda …

The sun is shining and I have been out working on the garden. Bless it’s little heart, the ground is still soppy wet around the planter beds. I did lots of thinning out earlier this week per the suggestion of my favorite butthead Brad. It seems to be helping. The squash that I planted from seeds had no blooms at all earlier this week and now it has lots of blooms and more buds ready to bloom at any minute.

Today I had to do some doctoring on our tomato plants. First I took these …

I cut up the old panty hose into little strips which I used to tie these up to some stakes …

cause these need to be up off of the ground …

Nothing taste better than a homegrown tomato sandwich on some fresh bunny bread with dukes mayo, salt & pepper! My mouth is watering now.

And just because my husband loves me & made me a flower box on our itty bitty front porch … I want to share a picture of one of the beautiful flowers he planted in it. Wasn’t that sweet of him? Please note, sweet is not a word I normally use when describing Richard … handy is … but not sweet!

Chrisi & Bapa garden progress

Chrisi & Bapa’s garden is coming along nicely. I am a little upset that it looks much better than my poor drowned planter boxes at this moment in time.

I cannot show you pictures of the blackberry bushes. I don’t know where they are hidden located. I forsee myself eating some crow as I am asking my daddy and Chrisi for some veggies out of their garden.

Have I told y’all lately that I am extremely jealous of my next door neighbor, substitute mother, gardening guru friend Penny? Y’all should see her garden. While my poor little planter beds are suffering the ill effects of my over planting and the torential down pours we’ve been having … Penny & Randy’s garden is progressing along quite nicely. She hasn’t sent me any updated pictures of the garden yet (it’s way too far away for me to go take pictures myself) she has sent me a couple new pictures of her flowers.

one of my personal favorite flowers of all time … the gerbera daisy!

These flowers were given to Penny by some folks at the school she taught at when she retired. It is also the same school my mom was a counselor at. We love that school and the people who work there.

I’m no expert, but I think they are tiger lillies? Maybe Penny will let us know for sure. I also think she needs to share some of them with her favorite neighbors!

Tan man is at it again! He has sent us another beautiful flower picture to add to his mom, Jodie’s page. I think Tanner should consider a possible major in photography when he grows up.

Chrisi & Bapa’s flowers are so pretty … but not nearly as pretty as she is!

and in an effort to not be behind the camera all of the time … we took one of us together.

And just in case you’re wondering … that is probably the most accurate looking picture of me you will ever see on here. I didn’t have on one lick of make up and I don’t think my hair was anywhere near brushed, but at least it wasn’t in a ponytail … which would be my normal hairstyle.

melinda’s first veggies of the year …

Bringing in my first produce of the year. I’m excited. I’m tickled pink with myself (and let me tell you, that’s a whole lotta pink … think pepto bottle). The squash and zuchinni are small but they are mine … mine, mine, mine! I took some of your advice and spent part of my evening thinning out our planter beds. Hopefully, this will allow more sunshine to get down to the root of the plants … resulting in more productive plants. We’ll see. I’m a little concerned about my green beans, it would appear that some type of bug is eating little holes in the leaves. If you have a clue or any advice on what to do about that, please let me know. This gardening stuff is hard work! I am learning as I go and if I don’t get any good veggies this year, then next year I will know more about what works and what doesn’t.

Looks like somebody … namely melinda … is going to be eating some squash and zuchinni pretty dadgum soon! Yummy yummy good for my tummy. I trecked out during the 3 second break in the monsoon we’ve been having for a month now to take some quick pictures of my garden progress. This is what I found …

we’ve already sampled some of this lettuce & spinach but it’s still growing away …

I’m a little concerned about one of my planter beds. The leaves on the plants seem to be turning a little yellow. I think it’s from all the rain. The beds have good drainage and I’m really not sure if I’ve planted them to close together or if it’s just all this rain. We really have had an abundance of rain over the last month. I would be greatful for any tips or advice y’all may have … please leave me a comment and let me know what you think I should do!

the tomato plants seem to be coming along fine … these particular ones were teeny tiny when I planted them. They will hopefully produce Roma tomatoes someday soon.

I can’t wait to fry up some squash later this week. Now if the sun would come out tomorrow, I would be a happy girl … but the weather man says “more rain”. grrr!
